FORT TRAFFICJAMBURG, Fla. -- The reality of Torii Hunter's contract status is starting to set in with manager Ron Gardenhire. Torii's contract is set to expire at the end of this season, and it's highly unlikely the Twins will be able to re-sign him.
“I don’t want to think about it, and I’m not going to think about it," Gardy said. "I’m just going to enjoy the moment and hope that everything gets taken care of. I’m not oblivious to it. I know it’s out there and what’s going on. Everyone here knows what Torii means to myself, to this organization and what he’s all about. I don’t think we even need to talk about that anymore.”

I'm trying to figure out why Durbin is pitching in sneakers? Is it for his injury? Laziness? Novelty?
I seem to recall something similar with Liriano last year, after his first stint on the DL. During his rehab, they had him throw from the mound in sneakers. By reducing traction between the feet and the ground, it keeps pitchers from throwing as hard and possibly aggrevating an arm injury.
Any idea on when Luis will be in camp? The first full-team workout is Saturday correct?
Good work on the Hunter article for PiPress today Jason. Hunter's quotes in the story really made him come off as polite and mature, and it's good to see him thinking realistically while trying to keep his and everyone else's focus on the team's interests rather than his personal situation.
That's a welcome change from a guy like Brett Favre, who is constantly floating his "Will I come back or won't I?" routine in the media. Favre draws all the attention to himself after games by crying and acting like he's played his last game, and then announces that he'll be coming back in the week preceding the Super Bowl when he can get the most media attention. I think his self-obsession is nauseating.
Hunter has been just as guilty as Favre when it comes to "me" time. In Hunter's case, it's about the almighty dollar as opposed to Favre. You have to go back to Frank Viola to find a Twin that spends as much time telling people he doesn't think he'll be a Twin for long.
It seems to me like Hunter only talks about his contract and status when he's asked about them, he doesn't bring the attention upon himself like Favre. Not that I would ever claim that Hunter has been totally intelligent or likable in all of his exchanges with he media.
It also seems to me like he brings it up to not bring it up. All I'd like is for an athlete, whether it's Favre, Hunter, Schilling or any of them is to play the game on the field. Just play. The fact that fans know an agents name and can list off salaries speaks to what's wrong with the game. In the real world, you aren't supposed to know what the person next to you makes. In the real world, if your performance suffers, you suffer financially. It's almost a game secondary to the game now to sit and speculate about contracts and option years. Just play.

You can easily find out what any government employee makes, because you are paying their salaries. Same deal with pro sports.
