The Twins have black armbands sewn onto the sleeves of their jerseys tonight in remembrance of Herb Carneal, who died yesterday. Eventually, the armbands will be replaced by patches the team will wear the whole season.
Just saw Brad Radke, who's throwing tonight's ceremonial first pitch, outside the Twins clubhouse, where he greeted each of his former teammates with hugs. Radke should be relaxing in retirement, but tonight, he said, "I'm nervous."
"Hopefully, I can either not airmail it or ... shorthop it."

A voice gone: Herb Carneal, 83, dies
Twins radio broadcaster Herb Carneal died Sunday morning at his home in Minnetonka because of congestive heart failure, the team said today.
"This is a sad day for the Minnesota Twins organization and millions of baseball fans across the Upper Midwest," Twins president Dave St. Peter said. "Herb Carneal's voice was the signature element of Twins baseball for multiple generations of fans.
"Clearly, he was one of the most beloved figures in Minnesota sports history. The Twins will proudly dedicate the 2007 season to the memory of Herb Carneal."
Carneal, a member of the Baseball Hall of Fame, started calling Twins games in 1962, the team's second season in Minnesota. Since 1998, he had been calling only home games.

Twins finalize 25-man roster
The Twins finalized their 25-man roster today after pitcher J.D. Durbin was claimed off waivers by Arizona and Josh Rabe was reassigned to minor league camp. Rabe will stay with the team through Saturday, when camp breaks.

Garza: "I'll be back"
Matt Garza said he wasn't surprised when Twins manager Ron Gardenhire told him he would start the season in Class AAA Rochester. Before a morning workout at minor league camp today, Garza said he was told he could be in Rochester "for a month, could be three months."
"They said they wanted me to be able to get in some innings," Garza said, "not pitch two innings here and, three days later, three innings there. I don't know ... I'll just do what I got to do to get back up there."
Garza said Gardenhire told him around 3:30, and the young right-hander packed quickly and walked down the street.
"It's kind of a good thing; I would have said stuff," Garza said. "I was seriously really upset. It's lucky I didn't say anything. I'll be OK. I'll do what I have to do. I'll be back."

Good sign for Garza?
Matt Garza said Tuesday that his next outing will be Friday, which puts him on five days' rest rather than the three- or four-day rotation he's been on.
He also said his pitch count has been moved up from 50 to 75 for Friday's outing, two good signs for the young righthander who is fighting for a spot in the rotation.

The Twins reassigned pitcher Mike Venafro, catchers Brad King and Matthew LeCroy, and infielders Tommy Watkins and Glenn Williams to minor league camp.
Venafro is the most noticeable of the roster moves, considering the lefty had a 0.00 earned run average in 10 innings this spring. That leaves seven relievers in camp -- Joe Nathan, Dennys Reyes, Jesse Crain, Matt Guerrier, Juan Rincon, Pat Neshek and J.D. Durbin. If the Twins go with 12 pitchers, no more bullpen cuts will be necessary. If they go with 11, it's likely Durbin will be the one to go.
Catcher Chris Heintz remains in camp while Joe Mauer is sidelined with the stress reaction in his left fibula, and Josh Rabe is hanging around while Rondell White nurses a sore hip.
